Humectant

Hyaluronic Acid

The hydration magnet — helps pull water into skin for a plumper, dewier look.

INCI name: Sodium Hyaluronate / Hyaluronic Acid

What it is

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant your body already makes. In skincare it acts like a sponge, drawing water toward the skin. On labels it often appears as Sodium Hyaluronate (a smaller, more stable form) or as a blend of different molecular weights.

What it helps with

  • Helps hydrate and plump the look of skin
  • Lightweight — layers well under moisturizer and makeup
  • Suits most skin types, including oily (hydration is not the same as oil)

Good for

  • Dehydrated skin
  • Fine lines that look worse when dry
  • Glass-skin / dewy routines
  • Layering under a moisturizer

Pairs well with

  • A moisturizer on top (to seal the water in)
  • Niacinamide
  • Panthenol
  • Ceramides

Watch out

HA pulls water from wherever it can. In very dry air, apply it to damp skin and always seal with a moisturizer — otherwise it can draw water out of deeper skin and leave you feeling tighter, not more hydrated.

FAQ

Q. Is sodium hyaluronate better than hyaluronic acid?

They are closely related — sodium hyaluronate is a salt form that is smaller and more stable, so it is common in formulas. For most people the practical difference is minor; a blend of weights is a good sign.

Q. Can oily skin use hyaluronic acid?

Yes. Hydration and oil are different things — oily, dehydrated skin is common. HA is lightweight and usually a good fit; just seal it with a light gel moisturizer.

Q. Should I apply hyaluronic acid to wet or dry skin?

Slightly damp skin, then lock it in with a moisturizer. On bone-dry skin in dry air, HA has less water to grab and can feel tight.
